SAVE THE DATE | 8-11 September, 2020 | Kigali Conference Center (KCC)

Between September 8-11, 2020, the Rwandan Government and the AGRF Partners Group will co-host the AGRF 2020 Summit. Since the first AGRF was held in Ghana in 2010 under the leadership of H.E. President Mills, the Forum has annually brought together Heads of State, Ministers, business leaders, development partner leadership, thought leaders, farmer organization representatives, youth entrepreneurs, and other critical stakeholders to focus on the actions and policies needed to move the continental agenda forward. The Summit was hosted by Heads of State in Tanzania in 2012, in Mozambique in 2013, in Ethiopia in 2014, and in Zambia in 2015. The Forum and its momentum have grown considerably over these years, and it has grown to even greater heights in the past few years in Kenya in 2016, in Cote d’Ivoire in 2017, in Rwanda in 2018, and in Ghana this year.

AGRF 2018 in Rwanda was one of the biggest yet, in terms of delegates, countries, and many outcomes. Under the leadership of H.E. President Kagame and the theme of Lead. Measure. Grow. Enabling New Pathways to Turn Smallholders into Sustainable Agribusinesses, AGRF 2018 brought together over 2,300 delegates from 79 countries with a resounding mission to transform agriculture in Africa. Large delegations from China, India, Israel and Brazil also signaled a surge of interest in the African continent, with new partnerships forged at the conference. With energy at a new high, the conference pledged to deliver billions of dollars in new investments for agriculture and agri-business, with aims to triple trade in agriculture between African countries.

AGRF 2019 in Ghana this past year built on this momentum with the outstanding leadership of H.E. President Akufo-Addo and the Government of Ghana. The Summit brought together more than 2,450 delegates from 89 countries around the theme Grow Digital: Leveraging digital transformation for sustainable food systems in Africa.

The AGRF Summit, together with the Forum’s many year-round activities, is designed to energize political will and advance the policies, programs and investments required to achieve an inclusive and sustainable agricultural transformation across the continent. It seeks to draw various stakeholders around a common purpose – to unleash the full potential of Africa’s 80% – the millions of smallholder farmers and their families who earn their livelihoods from small-scale farms and provide some 80% of the food and agricultural products consumed across the continent. The Forum is intended to evaluate current realities at all levels – local, national, regional and international – so that it can identify and catalyze the critical next steps towards agricultural transformation.

Expected outcomes

The AGRF 2020 Summit is critical for Africa’s agriculture and for Rwanda as a defining moment to unlock and highlight many of the political, policy, and financial commitments and innovations the continent needs to advance the commitments made at the Malabo Heads of State Summit and the SDGs Summit.
