About the event
The African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF) is a platform for global and African leaders to develop actionable plans that will move African agriculture forward. Established in 2010, the Forum has emerged as Africa’s premier platform that brings together a range of critical stakeholders in the African agriculture landscape to discuss and develop concrete plans for achieving the green revolution in Africa.
The Forum is technically and financially supported by an AGRF Partnership Group that includes: the African Union Commission, the NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Rockefeller Foundation, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), IDRC, YARA International, Mastercard Foundation, SACAU Groupe OCP Africa, Syngenta, the African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership, GROW AFRICA, AGCO Corporation and the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). AGRA is the implementing partner for the Forum and hosts the Secretariat at its head offices in Nairobi, Kenya.
At the 2016 African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF), we came together to advance the policies and secure the investments that will ensure a better life for millions of Africa’s farmers and families—and realize the vision of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In a region challenged by climate change, rapidly growing urban populations, and an urgent need for jobs, agriculture offers solutions, providing a clear path to food security and employment opportunities for all Africans.
We have seen through our collective efforts across the agriculture sector that there are innovations, institutions, programs, and policies that work. This gathering was our collective opportunity to highlight the best elements of Africa’s agriculture, the changes that are allowing farming families to lift themselves out of poverty by embracing farming as a business. It is up to all of us to come ready to build on this progress—quickly, efficiently, and at the speed and scale required to secure Africa’s rise through an agricultural transformation.
The 2017 AGRF focused on, “Accelerating Africa’s Path to Prosperity: Growing Inclusive Economies and Jobs through Agriculture.” It intensified the spotlight on agriculture as the key driver of African economies and established what it will take to ensure agriculture and agribusiness are driving inclusive and sustainable rural development. What has been true for the rest of the world is especially relevant for Africa today: Economic diversification and lasting wealth creation begins with a vibrant agriculture sector. In many African countries, agriculture still accounts for more than 70 percent of employment and a significant portion of GDP. It is essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and building a better future for all Africans.
Under the leadership of the Government of Cote d’Ivoire, and co-hosted by the AGRF Partners and the African Development Bank, the 2017 AGRF shaped up as a premier platform that built on the 2016 forum’s success with similar leadership from across the continent and the globe. The Forum was attended by over 750 delegates and high level dignitaries including African Heads of State, Agriculture and Finance Ministers, business leaders, thought leaders, senior donor representatives, and other important delegates.
